Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long does a car battery usually last?

Most car batteries last three to five years, but lifespan depends on climate, driving habits and how often the vehicle is used. Short trips, extreme temperatures and infrequent driving can shorten battery life because the alternator doesn’t have enough time to fully recharge it. Regular checks help identify early signs of ageing, such as slow cranking or dim lights.

  • What are the signs of a failing car battery?

Common signs include the engine turning over slowly, flickering interior lights, electrical issues or warning lights on the dashboard. A strong sulphur smell or visible corrosion around the terminals can also indicate problems. If the battery struggles in cold weather or after sitting unused, it may be nearing the end of its life.

  • Why do car batteries go flat so quickly sometimes?

A battery can drain quickly due to interior lights being left on, weak alternator output, parasitic electrical draw or extreme temperatures. Short, frequent trips prevent the battery from recharging fully. Age can also reduce a battery’s ability to hold a charge. Testing the charging system helps pinpoint the cause.

What to Know About Batteries

Under Australian conditions, we estimate that you’ll get three to four years of faultless performance from your vehicle battery. But there are things you can do to ensure you get the maximum possible life. Our technicians at Ben's Tyres recommend:

  • Ensure your battery remains fully charged. This particularly becomes an issue on vehicles not used regularly. Check the electrolyte fluids in the battery on vehicles that have not been used for a while.
  • Clean the battery regularly. Dirt and dampness are recipes for a short circuit to occur. We recommend using a damp sponge, followed by a dry cloth, to clean the battery case. Also, be on the lookout for corrosion building up on the terminals.
